FLIGHT 002

CAPTAIN : ALEX MERRELL

DESTINATION : SAN FRANCISCO (VIA BIG SUR)

I exist because of San Francisco. More specifically, I exist because of the San Francisco Art Institute, and an art book contest they held in 1983 where my parents met over my mom’s entry on Baroque Minimalism. I have found myself in the city too infrequently, so when, a few weeks ago, a friend at Gagosian invited me to a dinner celebrating their opening of artist Robert Therrien’s work, I extended a work trip in Northern California.

After a late DJ gig in Big Sur, I woke up that morning and slowly made my way to a long lunch with a friend at the impossibly stunning Post Ranch Inn. After a beautiful meal, multiple whale sightings, and a splash of Amaro, I hit Highway 1 North for one of the more exquisite drives I’ve seen. Long hours on the road call for a worthwhile batch of music for shimmying, taking in the scenery and, in my case, a mid route outfit change, because lunch was too splendid to leave on time.

Cheers to the California coastline.
